Description

Biobanking or the preservation of biomaterials, especially living cell lines, gametes, and embryos, can be a valuable resource for wildlife conservation. Southeast Asia is recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot with urgent need for conservation action. Currently only a few isolated projects and initiatives use Biobanking as a conservation tool. In 2022 Taipei Zoo hosted the first Asia Biobanking Network meeting with the vision of developing a collaborative network of biobanks within southeast and east Asia under the umbrella of a global wildlife biobanking network that is dedicated to sharing resources and expertise and growing a worldwide legacy of irreplaceable animal biomaterial (esp. reproductive and genetic) that can be used in support of species conservation. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of effective collaboration hence the need for a follow up workshop to bring together experts to help build and strengthen a regional network that enables us to build capacity, share knowledge and maximize the use of the limited resources and capabilities for Biobanking.
